Ask questions! Questions form an integral part of any successful interview. Good questions uncover important information. Your questions also demonstrate that you are well prepared, well informed, inquisitive, and articulate. The right questions deal with the job, the people, the work environment, the organization, and promotions. The wrong questions deal with vacation time, quitting time, and especially details you should already know from the job description, annual report, and your other research. Here are five key points to keep in mind:

  • What are your long-range and short-range goals and objectives?
  • When and why did you establish these goals and how are you preparing to achieve them?
  • What specific goals, other than those related to your occupation, have you established for yourself in the next ten years?
  • What do you see yourself doing in three years from now? In five years from now?
  • What do you really want to do with your life?
  • What are your long-range career objectives?
  • How do you plan to achieve your career goals?
  • What are the most important rewards you expect in your career?
  • Why did you choose the career for which you are preparing?
  • Which is more important to you, the money or the job?
  • What are your salary expectations upon graduation; what do you expect to be earning five years from now?
  • What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and weaknesses? Give an example of an incident when you demonstrated that strength/weakness.
  • How would you describe yourself?
  • How do you think a friend or professor who knows you well would describe you? Would they differ in their responses?
  • What motivates you to put forth your greatest effort?
  • How has your education prepared you for a career?
  • Why should I hire you?
  • What qualifications do you have that make you think that you will be successful?
  • How do you determine or evaluate success?
  • What do you think it takes to be successful in a company like ours?
  • In what ways do you think you can make a contribution to our company?
  • What qualities do you think a successful manager should possess?
  • Describe the relationship that should exist between a supervisor and subordinates?
  • What two or three accomplishments have given you the most satisfaction? Why?
  • Describe your most rewarding college experience.
  • Do you have plans for continued study?
  • (For graduate students): Why did you decide to get an MBA and what are the advantages of having such a degree?
  • Why did you select your college or university?
  • Have your expectations been met?
  • What led you to choose your major or field of study?
  • What academic subjects did you like best? Least?
  • Do you enjoy doing independent research?
  • If you could do so, would you plan your academic study differently?
  • What changes would you make in your college or university?
  • Do you feel that your grades are an accurate reflection of your academic achievement?
  • What have you learned from participation in extracurricular activities?
  • In what kind of work environment are you most comfortable?
  • How well do you work under pressure? Please give some examples.
  • In what part-time or summer jobs have you been most interested? Why?
  • How would you describe your ideal job following graduation?
  • Why did you decide to seek a position with our company?
  • What do you know about our company?
  • What are the two or three most important things to you in your job?
  • Are you seeking employment in a company of a certain size? Why?
  • Are you willing to relocate? Would it be a problem for you?
  • Do you have a geographical preference? Why?
  • Are you willing to travel?
  • How would you feel about spending six months to a year as a trainee?
  • Why do you think you want to live in this area/city?
  • What criteria are you using to evaluate potential employers?
  • What major problem have you encountered in your job or university experience and how did you deal with it?
  • What have you learned from your mistakes?





  • Ask questions regarding issues that are of genuine concern to you or of relevance to the company.
  • Ask questions throughout the interview (as long as you are not interrupting the interviewer or disrupting the flow of the interview). Ask a few “wrap-up” questions at the end.
  • Base your questions on the research you have done.
  • Be sure your questions are appropriate to the interviewer’s background (e.g., don’t ask a high tech question of a personnel manager).
  • Prepare your questions beforehand, in writing.
The Career Resources Library has several books with material about how to ask questions during an interview. Here are some examples of the kinds of questions you might want to ask:
  • What are the opportunities for personal growth?
  • What is the typical career path for this position?
  • What is a realistic time frame for advancement?
  • How is an employee evaluated and what are the criteria for promotion?
  • What is the retention rate of people in this position?
  • What is the company’s record of employment stability?
  • Can you describe the typical first year assignments?
  • Tell me about your initial and future training programs.
  • What are the challenging aspects of the job?
  • What are the company’s plans for future growth?
  • What industry trends does your company anticipate?
  • What makes your firm different from its competitors?
  • What are the company’s strengths and weaknesses?
  • How would you describe your corporation’s culture and management style?
  • Is it company policy to promote from within?
  • Can you describe the work history of the top managers?
  • What are the company’s expectations of new employees?
  • Can you describe the work environment?
  • What are typical characteristics of successful people in the company?
  • When can I expect to hear from you?
